In today’s world, we have really got to ask the question, “Is organic really organic?” Since the cosmetic industry is not regulated, there are few consumers know about what is really in their products that we buy. Unfortunately there are “fillers” such as dangerous preservatives and “foaming agents” in our so called “organic and natural” products.

For instance, when a foaming agent “Sodium Laureth Sulfate” is followed by the term, “derived from coconut oil” consumers assume that it has to be good for you. This is usually assumed since coconut is natural and is quite possibly an organic food that is grown and can be eaten. In this instance, nothing can be further from the truth. In the process of making Sodium Laureth Sulfate, there is a harmful chemical used which is a known carcinogen, Cocomide DEA. Carcinogens cause cancer. This, in my eyes, is very misleading to us as customers.

Then, there are other instances that raise the question that, if something says its organic, is it really organic? For instance, seeing a so called “70% organic” shampoo bottle on the shelf of a health food store, we should be asking ourselves, is it really organic? Lets take a closer look. As you inspect the ingredients, you might see a phrase such as “organic infusions of horsetail, nettle and calendula extracts”. These herbs are usually tea bags allowed to steep in boiling water and then used in the products that you buy at health food stores that usually costs more then a $2 bottle of shampoo at a local grocery store. Lets not stop there though. We need to look at the rest of the ingredients. Not only is your $15 bottle of “organic” shampoo not made up of organic ingredients such as stated, but the rest of the ingredients usually contain dangerous preservatives and such, that are cancer causing chemicals used in the process of making it. So, here it is, your 70% organic shampoo, containing 90% water and the remainder ingredients is made of harmful chemicals which costs three times as much as a bottle of cheap shampoo at a local store, and in the end, is no better for you.

So, be an informed consumer. Educate yourself on what is really organic and what isn’t. What is natural and what isn’t. There are good products out there, but they are few and far between.
